tile batt problem

I bought one of those bats with the cut out for a bisque tile at NCECA, =3D
and several tiles. Today is the first time I have attempted to use them. =
=3D
I am having problems getting the clay to stick to the tiles. After the =3D
first one popped off while I was undercuttting with a sharp stick and =3D
flew off the wheel I tried wetting the tile first. The first effort =3D
resulted in too much water being absorbed into the tile and the clay =3D
ball would slide around and not stick at all. Then I had two work out OK =
=3D
and the last two came loose when I was undercutting again. Has anyone =3D
had good luck with these things?

Jim,
I use some red 6x6 quarry tile held in a plastic bat I cut out 10 years
ago. I've found wetting the tile *somewhat, damp sponge to remove dust, *h=
elps
adhesion by the clay so I give it a quick swipe with a sponge--no free wate=
r
visible on top. I also slam the clay onto the tile pretty forcefully.
Giving the two a couple seconds to get comfortable with each other also
seems to help. I have to wire off the thrown piece like with any other
bat...the bottom will crack well before it will release on its own. For yo=
u
this may be a little like getting clay onto your very first bat, takes some
getting used to. You'll be accustomed to it quickly.
Good potting,
