Tom Spleth was at Alfred in "73 after he graduated from Alfred. I only
met him during a short time in '73. He started casting and developed
his ware for casting. He has given workshops recently in NC. A good
friend at Alfred went to one of Toms workshops recently. I have written
him to see if he has some casting bodies. I will pass this info along
when I hear from him. A book on casting has a lot of information about
casting by some well know potters like Tom and Richard Notkin. This is
a good book, lots of info and won't break the bank. It is important to
use clays with fine particle sizes usually when casting porcelain. If
you take traditional porcelain cone 10 clay bodies, they mold be made
into a casting slip fairly easily. I don't have my notes here at home,
but I'm sure I have some good casting slip formulas. It also goes
beyond the clay type when you start making a slip. I used a dispersal (
Darvan 7, sodium silicate, and soda ash.) ( that worked) when I cast
some large 20" diameter bowls. Start by seeing what clays your local
clay supplier carries. This will be the start for you to develop a
casting body....I'll out some in my notebooks over the holiday....
