Dear Kenneth Adams,
Sodium Carbonate melts at 831 deg C but unlike Sodium Chloride does not
readily volatilise.
Various techniques are used to get it distributed around a kiln chamber. Th=
e
first used was to dissolve the anhydrous compound in hot water and spray it
in through the fire ports.
I am not sure if a glaze will form at Orton cone 1. Only one way to find
out....Test.
Be aware that Glazes derived from raw Sodium compounds do tend to craze.
This can lead to seepage if the clay is not fully vitrified .
There is good literature on these processes.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis,
Redhill,
South Australia.
