Steve is right. Unless you have a good firing arrangement somewhere -
kiln first, wheel second. There are many ways to work with clay and come
up with good work without having a wheel. In fact, if you will work for
a time doing hand built things, it will enhance your skill at the wheel.

Or go for second-hand, then you'd have enough money for one of each.

my students are much happier with the Shimpo wheels in our studio than the
Brent. I am not just sure of the reasons though. It might be they have a
hard time putting the splash pan on the Brent, for a time some one had
removed the bat pins from the Brent and that confused them. From my
perspective - we have more problems with the Shimpos, with the
potentiometer, still have three wheels out of commission as we try to track
down the problems there.

personally I prefer the whisper and see that they have it in the RK model
now.

I cracked my students up, when I hit the foot pedal on a
brent and almost sent the platter flying. It reminded me why I
hate them: low speed lack of control. The cone drive shimpos are
great at low speed.

I did my throwing demos on my Korean kickewheel (on a
portable stand), but wanted to show the jumping/chattering tool at
higher speeds and that is why I used the brent.

Do the new shimpo whispers act like most non-cone drive wheels at low speed=
