i only threw pots for a few months with the standard, low-to-the-ground
wheel in the crouch position most potters don't seem to mind. Then i met a
really fast production potter who mounts his wheel on cinder blocks and i
tried it right away and never went back. Then i made some pipe extensions
for my wheel. I think the wheel head is about 8" higher than standard ones
and it helps a lot.
