discrepancy in controller and cone

Hello cowlay bugs,

I have a large and a small Skutt kiln and use my controller on both.
Yesterday, I did a 04 bisque firing in the big kiln, doing a candling and
and 04 bisque firing. The cone in the kiln sitter did not reach 04, no bend=
.
I tried a glaze fire in the small kiln, a slow 04 program, and the kiln
sitter cone, again, did not reach temperature. What could be askew? I admit=
,
I did not put large cones inside either so I don't exactly know what temp
they got to.

Thanks,

Centa,
Could be a simple Thermocouple needs replacing. Every 50 or so firings min=
d
needs a new home. For skutt they run $14.00 on my kiln KM1027. Also, you
might want to check your volts and AMPs. My electric company went into
OVERDRIVE when it was -12 degrees and than they cut back a bit and had a
power surge when they temps got warmer. The Amps told me (14,11,14) my
elements were going, I could still fire up my kiln but it took longer to
reach temp. My ramp hold program ave around 14.5 and than shot up to 18.5
Now with new thermocouple and new elements my ramp hold is less at 11.5 and
less power to reach my bending cone 6 firings. Hope that helps some....not
all the answers but places to look? My 2 cents. . . .
Where I should never take on custom orders after Dec 4 for
Christmas.,...what was I thinkin?

you can usually program an offset to the controller... you run it up
to when your cones are bending, and then tell it to shut off from now
on at that point... old thermocouples, or only having one
thermocouple instead of using 3 zone control can cause off readings,
either for part of the kiln, or the whole thing.

I am assuming that you are firing each kiln, one at a time,
with the same portable controller and thermocouple.

A digital controller is like a car. Sometimes it needs fine
tuning. I would use large cones on the shelves to determine
just how far off the firings were. Then I would add hold
time to bend the 04 cone, or adjust either Cone Offset or
Thermocouple Offset.

Every time you adjust your digital firings, you will learn
more about the controller. It is similar to learning how to
use a new cell phone.

Last time I checked with Orton the small and large cones are of the same
composition. When you put a cone horizontally in the shut-off with the
weight of the rod resting on it bends earlier than a cone in a cone pat
which is the standard.
Another strategy, in addition to those posted, is to put a higher cone in
the shut-off and fire visually, shutting down when the cone in the plaque
bends.
I haven't used the bars- maybe there constant section compensates for the
impact of being in the shut-off.
