Thanks Anne - what an interesting article, - in the same sort of vein =3D
the Ben Navaee Gallery http://bennavaeegallery.com/default.aspx in =3D

Small Is Beautiful =3D20

Copied from the gallery webpage explaining the exhibit:=3D20
"Economics As If People Mattered" =3D20
A book by E. F. Schumacher, published in 70s responding
to emerging globalization.

Schumacher was for 20 years the Chief Economic Advisor to the National =3D
Coal Board in the United Kingdom. He was one of the first economists to =3D
question the appropriateness of using GNP to measure human well being, =3D
emphasizing that "the aim ought to be to obtain the maximum amount of =3D
well being with the minimum amount of consumption." Schumacher's work =3D
coincided with the growth of ecological concerns and with the birth of =3D
environmentalism, which is a movement centered around ecology, health, =3D
and human rights. It demands the sustainable management of resources and =
=3D
protection of the natural environment through changes in public and =3D
individual behavior.=3D20
=3D20
Schumacher said:"[A modern economist] is used to measuring the 'standard =
=3D
of living' by the amount of annual consumption, assuming all the time =3D
that a man who consumes more is 'better off' than a man who consumes =3D
less. A Buddhist economist would consider this approach excessively =3D
irrational: since consumption is merely a means to human well-being, the =
=3D
aim should be to obtain the maximum of well-being with the minimum of =3D
consumption. The less toil there is, the more time and strength is left =3D
for artistic creativity. Modern economics, on the other hand, considers =3D
consumption to be the sole end and purpose of all economic activity." =3D
... "It is clear, therefore, that Buddhist economics must be very =3D
different from the economics of modern materialism, since the Buddhist =3D
sees the essence of civilisation not in a multiplication of wants but in =
=3D
the purification of human character. Character, at the same time, is =3D
formed primarily by a man's work. And work, properly conducted in =3D
conditions of human dignity and freedom, blesses those who do it and =3D
equally their products."

E. F. Schumacher was one of the reasons I became a potter and why
Mingei and William Morris made so much sense to me. Mingei is
primary about preserving local culture and being inspired by your
place, your community and the nature around it.
