We have been asked to start an art program for adjudicated boys and we want
6" x 6" white unglazed tiles for a mural project.
Lowest price found thus far is $1.00 per tile. Are there any other sources
with better prices? Any companies willing to donate and receive a tax
deduction?

Daltile sells 6x6 bisque tiles in boxes of 50 at $.59 per tile. Their phone
number is (800) 933-TILE and they also have a website. I think it's

Jennifer,
You don't say what temperature you will be firing to, but I wrote an
article for the web site Tiles on the Web about firing commercial
unglazed tile to cone 5. That's at
http://www.aimnet.com/~tcolson/webtiles.htm and it lists all the
brands of unglazed tile I've ever tried- 8 or 10 of them. If you're
only firing to cone 04 or so, you may not be interested in all the
ingformation that's there, and any of those brands will work for you.
But what you need to do is find your local distributor (the wholesale
warehouse, not your local tile store) that handles that brand, and
have them order directly from the factory for you.
$1 per tile ($4/sq ft) is a lot to pay for unglazed tile, but is
probably about what you would pay through a ceramics supply dealer.
Depending on brand, I can get unglazed 6" x 6" tiles for between $1.50
and $2.50/ sq ft from distributors.

Hi Jennifer,
By calling around to a number of tile businesses, I found one that would
sell me glazed 6x6 tiles at .35 ea. This was for a school project, I've
also gotten some good discounts when purchasing for projects with boys in
the Youth Authority and for my classes in the prisons.
It never hurts to ask!
