At our school the kids go to 'culture camp' for a week in the Fall and o=
ne week in the Spring. They sleep in tents, net fish from the lake, pick be=
rries and have campfires that they cook on. They also dig clay from the sho=
re and make things. Of course they also spend time just running around in t=
he bush too. In February they (grade 5 and up) get to go on a hunt for wood=
bison. A conservation officer shoots it and they get to skin and cut it up=
. While out at the camp they ice fish.
Before they can go on the bison hunt they have to take all the hunter sa=
fety education courses and pass them. While on the hunt they usually take t=
ons of pictures and videos. Later in the Spring we have a community feast w=
ith bison, moose and salmon and the kids show their movie.
Lucky us, living in the real world! When my oldest child was about two s=
he showed too much interest in lighting matches and fire. Living in the fla=
mmable forest this was something I had to channel. My solution was to let h=
er make and light the stove fire every morning. She learned how to make a p=
roper fire and most important, WHERE to make one. Worked so well that I did=
the same with all the other kids about that age.
Don't know what went wrong with me though.....I have turned into a real =
pyro with my wood firing. Just love that thing. Even the kids at school ac=
cuse me of being a pyromaniac. Seems I am in good company on this list.....
