craft, art and tv

years back, every small town had a local crafts person, a good
singer, someone that played the piano. the gal that sung for
weddings was adored. there was always some folks
that told good stories, had a joke that was new. they became
local folks with status.

now, if you sing at church you are compared to a rock star or
someone that sings at the met. we all see the great artists,
we know what the very best is. and then, we compare with ourselves
or others to what `should be the best`. if you fall short...you are
considered a hack.

we see tiger play golf, we see adrian peterson run the ball, we
see jordan sink that shot. we see it every day. how do we compare?
we don't.

remember that fellow that could weld? he could bend metal and
make most anything. he was admired by all.
now, we go to a special shop, it is sent away to a `professional`
the kids cannot even watch. or, we toss it out and buy new.

remember the guy or gal that could grow anything? they were
really wonderful -admired people. now we go to the garden center
and get help from a ph.d. in ag. how do we stack up? not at all.
we don't go to an experienced gardener, we seek help from a scientist.

most of us as crafts people/artists have to gird our loins. take that
bull and throw them out.
we have to trust ourselves.

we see the same pots, over and over. the same drip, the same
glazes...the same images. we are told...`these are the best there is`.
but, who says they are best? experts? i think often...`don't tell me
how to think, or respond to art...i can do that just fine`.

i think this is one reason home grown craft is coming back. we are
sick of being told what to buy, how to decorate, martha stuart giving
us advice in what and how. we even want to grow our own, sew and mend,
make things. it is starting again.

the death of art is at hand. fake, metaphor, poor craftsmanship panned
out as `the real thing`. and, i always say...`who wants it?` not many.

local art, local craft, people who care and work at what they love.
that is the important stuff. look at humor on tv. making fun of people an=
d
our fine institutions...obscene jokes. sex and violence as humor.
what is funny? not much.
and yet we look to that as important? it is not.

be a local crafts person. promote yourself as a working artist. and the
emphasis is on `working`. making, and doing something of value.
you are not dreaming, you are making. that is real.
and what you make in clay will last a million years. that is forever.

I stopped watching or paying attention to anything Ms Stewart did
when I saw a piece of a TV program showing her making a "turducken".
All I could think while watching that was "that's at least 8 meals
for us (family of two + pets) she's ruining...what a waste of food".
Never paid her any attention afterward.

Part of doing it ourselves is not being wasteful.
Which is why most of us recycle our scrap clay,
make our own glaze, buy Phil's tools (that can last generations)
build our own kilns, cut our own wood, grow our own food,
raise our own meat animals, etc.
You can live on a LOT less than the "experts" tell you is possible.
But you "gotta wanna"...and that's a movement also starting again.
The expression "git-er-done" goes hand-in hand with what Mel is saying.
It's how we should have been living all along.
Just my opinion...YMMV

Yes, generalizations and hypocrisy.

Hi John,

What are you trying to say? Or intending to say?

Would you kindly re-phrase?

"Generalizations are dangerous" ?, which is itself, a 'generalization'...?

Have you any actual, specific generalizations in mind which you object to,
while possibly also including ones you prefer?

Try again?

Yes...

One thing which appals me about 'Business' generally - and, the larger the

Hi Vince, all...

I dunno...I'm confused about what the complaint was, or, even if it was a
complaint at all.

I hate talking 'over' anyone's head, but if they have no interest to reply
when personally addressed/asked to do so, in order to further clearity,
understanding, then, oh well.

Show me one Post in-a-thousand which does not use or rely on
'generalization', and, we may all savor it in unison.

Generalizations are inseparable from 'general' human thought process and to
disclosures resultant to such.

Why one in-a-thousand generalizations will inspire a pejorative reaction in
one person, about 'generalizations' globally, is beyond me to fathom.

So...

Merry specific ( Western rite now, Eastern in it's turn ) Christmas to
specifically every one individually !

Lol...

Oye...
