You know, I give bowls to Miriam's kitchen, that feeds the homeless in fogg=
=3D
y bottom in DC and it amazing how many people nationwide, will ship their w=
=3D
ork, because they don't mind paying for the shipping and want to help.=3DC2=
=3D
=3DA0 They have a yearly event called "100 bowls of compassion," which I us=
ua=3D
lly attend and I am amazed at the silent auction at how many of the pieces =
=3D
are from ceramic artists and artists in other mediums, that are not any whe=
=3D
re near the DC area.
Very hard to put a price on not having enough food to eat, I think.=3DC2=3D=
A0 P=3D
overty is so prevalent in our country and getting worse, that anything any =
=3D
of us can do to alleviate that, be it in a small way, with a few $10 bowls,=
=3D
is still a positive step.=3DC2=3DA0 It takes lots of potters to produce an=
eve=3D
nt that needs 300 bowls!
I have shipped my own work to charities around the country.=3DC2=3DA0 If yo=
u ar=3D
e willing to write it off as part of your charitable contribution or just :=
=3D
"eat the costs", it is entirely up to you.
I just put it out there to those who might be local or not, or so inclined =
=3D
to ship.
Best with your own charitable thing going on whereever you are...

Susan,
I make bowls for an Empty Bowls sale here locally.=3DC2=3DA0 It is a good c=
ause=3D
and I support it with pride.=3DC2=3DA0 However, think about the economics =
of w=3D
hat you ask.=3DC2=3DA0 I don't know what your sale charges for each bowl bu=
t he=3D
re the bowls sell for $10.00 each.=3DC2=3DA0 It would cost somewhere in the=
$7.=3D
00 range for me to ship a bowl the 3000 miles from here to there not counti=
=3D
ng the packing materials. If I could produce a $10.00 bowl for $3.00 in mat=
=3D
erial and labor it would still be a wash to send a $10.00 check instead of =
=3D
the bowl and sell the bowl here.=3DC2=3DA0 To my way of thinking an Empty B=
owls=3D
sale only makes sense when the bowls are produced locally.=3DC2=3DA0 And e=
ven =3D
then it only makes sense, with gas prices the way they are, if you can deli=
=3D
ver several bowls without going too far out of your way.=3DC2=3DA0 I'm with=
you=3D
in spirit and hope you can raise a bunch of money for a good cause.

Hi Susan,
I hope you and your fine family are well in this new year. I'm so glad =3D
that I saw your post about this.=3D20
I am making a small transition in my work - moving from heavy production =
=3D
work to more a limited series type of production. My back injury is really =
=3D
forcing me to make this change so I'm not too happy about it, but at least =
=3D
I can still work.
=3D20
One thing that I will not cut back on is my bowl production. About half of =
=3D
the bowls that I make go to these sort of needs and I'm always looking for =
=3D
more good fund raising events to support. Would you mind passing the =3D
information of any such event along to me. I have been given so much in my =
=3D
life I simply must do what I can to help.
*To all on Clayart - please consider*
For those are concerned about the cost let me break it down a little. 10 =
=3D
bowls at 1 1/2 pounds of clay - 15lb =3D40 32 cents a pound is =3D244.80. M=
y =3D
rule of thumb for glaze and firing cost is 2 times the cost of the clay, =
=3D
or =3D249.60. I double box with bubble wrap in the first box and peanuts in=
=3D
the outer box, costs around =3D244-5 with UPS fees of =3D2412. Totals =3D24=
31.40 =3D
for ten bowls.=3D20
Sunday after church, my wife and I went to a steak house for dinner and =3D
had a steak apiece. It is very nice place that we don=3DE2=3D80=3D99t go to=
=3D
often be as usual the tab was =3D2438 with tip. If I had to I'd pass on thi=
s =3D
twice a month event to keep making and shipping these bowls.=3D20
Please, I'm really not blowing my own horn here - just urging you to join =
=3D
in since ALL of us have the skill to do this. To make a difference.
Thanks always,
Larry Kruzan
