I just wanted to let everyone know that a book about Richard and Marj
Peeler
has been published. It is a wonderful collection of photos of their work
and
stories about them and is really beautifully done. Richard and Marj made
pottery and sculpture for over 50 years and Mr. Peeler taught ceramics at
DePauw University for many years, the new art center is named in his
honor.

The Putnam County Museum Announces the Publication of
Peeler Pottery: A Retrospective
The Putnam County Museum, Greencastle, Indiana, has just announced the
publication and release of its second book, Peeler Pottery; A
Retrospective,
by Marj Peeler, et al.
The 342 page book tells the story of Richard and Marj Peeler from their
meeting in 1941 as art students at Indianapolis Arsenal Tech High School
through their college and courting years and the building of their
self-constructed rammed earth home in southern Putnam County. It
continues
with the story of Richard's tenure on the art faculty at DePauw University
where the new Peeler Art Center is named in his honor.
In 1972 Richard retired from DePauw, and, together with Marj, opened
Peeler
Pottery, a production studio they built in their backyard. They worked as
a
team producing utilitarian and artistic pottery until Richard's death in
1996. The major emphasis of the book is documenting, through 756 color
photos, the beauty and diversity of the Peelers' artistic creations. Their
pottery is the major focus of the book, but their sculptures, Richard's
wood
turnings, and Marj's fabric and gourd art are also covered.
The book is available through the museum as a limited edition hard bound
volume with dust jacket for $75 or soft bound for $40. The Putnam County
Museum is located at 1105 North Jackson Street, Greencastle, IN 46135. The
book may be purchased at the museum, ordered by phone at 765-653-8419, by
email at museum@co.putnam.in.us or through their website
www.putnamcountymuseum.org.

Their house and studio was really unique. Mr. Peeler preferred angles that
were not 90 degrees. The Peeler Book has a wonderful account from Marj on
building the rammed earth home and there are many excellent pictures of
the house and studio. I think it is neat that they made a life out of
working with clay and lived in a house that was made of clay.

I am so pleased that you remember his kindness and generosity. They were
always willing to help others and gave so much of their time to anyone
that came to their studio. He was a great teacher, artist, sculptor,
potter and photographer. His last class at DePauw University all eleven of
his students went onto to become successful in ceramics in one way of
another. To me that is one of the true measures of a teacher.

Best Regards from West Central Indiana,
