Thank you for the extensive information regarding keywords. I knew that I
would get a lot of information from all of you. I appreciate your taking
the time to share some of your knowledge.

As for search engines, content is king and where that content exist on a
page is important. It's important to use all your important and "relevant"
keywords in the natural flow of your sites informational content. Be sure t=
o
not over use keywords in your content as this can result in negative rating=
s
by the search engines.

I am looking for a list of "keywords" that any of you have used when
building your websites. I was informed that you should build these into
your site so that when something similar to your business is queried on
google, your website will come up as a possibility. Thanks for the
information.

It depends on your work. If you type in "Mashiko Potter" or
"mashiko pottery", I pop up 1st and 2nd.

Think of things that make your work unique: your
influences, your favorite potters, etc.

My friend Euan Craig posts more photos of his work, so he appears
ahead of me when you do a photo shoot.

I agree with Lee, find some specifics that make your work unique. Maybe
include what kind of clay/temp/glaze/forms/style. You might also consider
some geographic keywords if you sell a lot of your work locally and you
think people might search for "(style-of-work) in (location)". If people
might search for you by name make sure you use your name enough that the
search results will point to you first or 2nd.

I've been doing a lot of research lately about keywords and search engine
optimization because I'm working on a new site.
Here are a few keyword tools that I used:
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/
http://www.google.com/sktool/#

I like the top one because it shows the competition and search volume for
each term. From what I understand you want to find keywords with good
search volume but not a lot of competition, especially when starting out.
More specific or "long tail keywords" would be a good idea to start with.
I''m not sure how specific the tools get though. I typed in Mashiko and
seemed to get some results.

You probably already know most of this but if you're looking for more info
you can check out

or a number of other sites about search engine optimization. From what I'v=
e
read you probably won't be at the top of the google results over night and
there are a lot of other factors involved besides keywords. Most notably
the amount and quality of other sites that link to your site.

Good luck!

Cyndi,

I actually just explained this to a potential client (from this list infact=
)
for building her website.

In fact, any of you who are looking into building a website or hiring
someone may find this information useful.

Cyndi, your keywords all depend on the content of your site. Anyone can pu=
t
any keyword in their meta-tags but it that is not the only factor for searc=
h
engine placement--and here's the rub: it must correlate with the rest of
the content in the site. The bots look for a relationship between your
keywords and the rest of the pages on your site. This also contributes to
how you are ranked. So, here's what I do:

1. do searches for sites that are like yours, what yours will be,
etc--including similar content.
2. Take the top 5 websites and look at their source code
3. After comparing on contrasting their source code, build your own list
and then modify to suit your site. In fact, you can copy and paste and the=
n
modify accordingly.
4. Tagging images with related key words from your pages I am recall will
also help--this is labor intensive as you have to do this to each individua=
l
image so I usually only do this with design related images--not for sale
5. Register your site with the search engines: yahoo, google, etc.

Have fun

Tony

Steve (and others),

You mentioned making text that is hidden to visitors but visible to search
engines.

BE CAREFUL!

Google, and I would assume other search engines, have rules against that.
They even say that you your pages will be removed for things like that. I'=
m
not sure if they would actually catch you or how long it would take but I
like to play it safe. You can find out more about it here:

http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=3Den&answer=3D663=
53

I've heard shady search engine optimization techniques referred to as "blac=
k
hat" and the techniques that follow the rules as "white hat" if you're
looking for something to google.

I'm pretty interested in the different languages approach. I was just
thinking about that today. After hearing about the China vs. Google issue =
I
did some reading and found out that the largest search engine in China is
actually www.baidu.com. I wonder how hard it would be to get ranked there
or if it would bring you any business? Of course everything is in Chinese
and Google Translate wasn't working for me so maybe I'll try again later.

Also, good point about the miss-spellings! I always forget about that.

Actually, =3DA0 you can move your site up, but if you do this, you get a
green arrow next to the site. (I just tested.)

=3DA0 =3DA0 The good aspect of being signed in, is that the paid=3DA0=3DA0 =

=3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0=3DA0 The funny aspect at the google.cn site, is that whil=

Brandon, that is the purpose of meta keyword tags. But they are
obsolete, because Google does not use them.

"in September 2009 Matt Cutts of Google announced that they are no
longer taking keywords into account whatsoever"

"For those unaware, the meta keyword tag is a way to insert text into
an HTML page that is not visible when the page is viewed through a
browser. Some search engines have read the content of the tag and
associated the words within it along with the page's regular body
copy."

Lee,

I was referring to this part of Steve's message:

*"i have heard but haven't tried putting text on my page and color it the
same as the background to make it invisible to a visitor. search engines d=
=3D
o
not see color - only text."*

I assumed that when he was talking about coloring the text the same as the
background he was referring to the text between the html tags in his
document since I'm not aware of the text (keywords, description, etc)
between the head tags having a "color".

But I still have a lot to learn. I just know google doesn't endorse
"hiding" text or links. You do bring up a good point that keywords in meta
tags aren't as important as they used to be. Make sure you have your
keywords in your titles, heading tags, and emphasized in a few places in
your documents. I'm sure there are other key spots but that's all I can
remember off the top of my head....
