what to put on the foot if not paraffin

Lee Love gave me a great answer a while back. He suggested putting
terra sig on the bottoms of my work. Wow! Instant smooth bottom. No
grog suddenly showing up on the bottom to scratch whatever the piece
is put on. Nice feel, nice look. I use a white terra sig because I
prefer to work with a white clay body.

I apply a few coats of terra sig to dry greenware. And if I get a
little carried away - no problem. The terra sig makes for some
interesting glaze things to happen.

I've been having good luck with it. My pie plates are like teflon.

You can see some Swat Pakistani bowls that are an inspiration to me
and a couple of my amber mugs here:

What to put on the foot if not paraffin????=3D20

It's 30 plus years ago since I've used hot wax. Since then I've used a pie=
=3D
ce of 14"X 18" wet carpet attached to a piece of marine plywood. I wipe th=
=3D
e foot with a slight downward twisting motion=3D2C move ahead to a clean s=
po=3D
t for a final wipe=3D2C set on the tray and grab another pot. Every ten po=
ts=3D
or so I give the carpet a quick scrub rinse=3D3B swipe the excess water of=
f =3D
with the scrub brush and do ten more. No muss=3D2C no fuss! Perfect wipe=
l=3D
ine.=3D20

As others have said=3D2C paying attention to glaze application methods faci=
li=3D
tates foot cleaning time as well. =3D20

I like the terra sig idea for smooth feet. One can assess the stature of t=
=3D
he potter by the attention to the feet!!! =3D20

Wet Carpet.

What carpet do you use that does not get moldy and smelly?

Hi=3D2C I used to work in a small ceramic giftware factory.
We used a one foot by two feet sheet of felt=3D2C which is made for this pu=
rp=3D
ose.
It gets well wetted=3D2C then the excess is squeegeed off. It is placed on =
a =3D
formica or metal surface and smoothed over so that it doesn't move when use=
=3D
d.
One smooth pass over with the item to be cleaned is enough to leave a smoot=
=3D
h glaze free base and a little up the side.
When finished we hosed the felt sheet down in the sink and hung it up to dr=
=3D
y. I believe it is made from sheep's wool.

Very short nap rubber backed carpet tile.
When glazing is finished hose down in pottery wash bay,
clip to rack, drip dry.
