Bill=3D2C Memory lane=3D2C I also built a Pacifica "Miss Squeaky" kit wh=

r's turret gun motor drive system. Yet I still had a working Alpine till I =

gave it to an apprentice when I moved out here in 2000. Back to Miss Sque=

ld=3D
have no doubt named "Miss Thumpy" because when set on a wooden floor=3D2C =
th=3D
ere was a resonating thump with every rotation of the wheel head caused by =
=3D
a slight thickness in the belts where each belt's ends were joined. The be=

lts had all been installed so that the bumps arrived together at the large =

pulley. Pacifica sent new belts=3D2C no lumps no thumps.

You make some good points in favor of the RK Whisper=3D2C as did several ot=
he=3D
rs as this subject evolved.

The older I get the more determined I am not to fall into an irretrievable =

mindset about anything so I'm thinking new thoughts=3D2C and trying them on=
n=3D
ot uncomfortably.

I was of the same mind as you - working at the wheel=3D2C using all my sens=
es
and thinking the changes in the noises from my wheel were a necessary part
of the process. My wheel was a Pacifica "Make-Kit"=3D2C an electric wheel t=
ha=3D

came with all the electrical and mechanical parts and I built the wooden
frame to hold it all together. Worked on this wheel from 1980 until just a
few years ago=3D2C passing it along to one of my students. Had I given the =
wh=3D
eel
a name it might have been Miss Squeaky.
=3D20

I decided on the VL Whisper. I think the one thing that swayed me is the
direct drive/free wheeling aspect. There are no belts. The speed control is
very sensitive and when not engaged=3D2C the wheel head is free to be turne=
d =3D
in
any direction by hand. If I were to give this wheel a name it would be
"Quiet Betty". This is the important part - After a day of "test driving"
the wheel=3D2C throwing a variety of forms=3D2C getting the height adjusted=
=3D2C =3D
I
almost didn't notice that the wheel made no noise. Maybe it's like folks wh=
=3D
o
lose one of their senses and others are strengthened to compensate. I no
longer listened for wheel sounds=3D2C I only used my senses of sight and to=
uc=3D
h.
I let my sense of hearing listen to NPR=3D2C talk shows as I gave up gettin=

e!
