I've been plagued by cracking since I inherited it from my mother. Thanks mom.

Before it happen: I notice a thickening of the skin at the corners of my
nails. I use a sharp knife to "pare" the skin down. Don't go too deep.
You'll know if you did. Vitamin E Oil seems to help. Rub a bit into the
fingertips each evening at bedtime.

After the fact: Try triming the thickened skin from both sides of the
crack, use a knife or fingernail scissors, apply Vitamin E Oil, and then
the crossed bandage or just a bandaide.
