Tom's body which contained: 6 Tile, Kaopaque 20, OM4 Ball and Veegum
T was a very workable body. It threw very well and was easy to dry
without severe warping problems. Good glaze fit and good color. I
worked with it for about 14 yrs. Made a lot of pots with that body recipe.

The problem at present is clays. My supplier is telling me that 6
Tile is no longer 6 Tile although the bags still say that it's 6 Tile
clay. It's actually Sapphire Kaolin which is a great thrower and my
preference over 6 Tile. Kaopaque is a clay that's been altered to
make it whiter. Iron and Titanium have been removed and this
increases the production costs so it was basically discontinued in
about 2004. All of these clays are now owned by Imerys, a french
mineral supplier. Georgia Kaolin Co., the original supplier of these
clays is long gone. They are now mined and distributed by KT Clay
which is owned by Imerys.

I don't use Tom's clay any longer because of the above. I've
switched to Sapphire in lieu of 6 Tile, Kingsley Kaolin instead of
Kaopaque, and I use J-2 Ball Clay. These are all KT Clays and these
clays make a very good light colored body. I actually like the
present mix better than Tom's old body, not to say that his clay
wasn't good. It was and still is providing one can get the
ingredients. I've thrown Tom's new body and it's the bomb. Great clay.

For my whiter body I'm using the ECC clays: Super Standard and
Standard Porclain. ECC is also owned by Imerys.

So much for my take on this, Craig Martell Hopewell, Oregon

Turner is snowed in at Mars Hill and doesn't have access to clayart =3D
right now so he asked me to post this for him ...

Tom Turner's Porcelain
There are two, the old Georgia Kaolin body that used Tile 6 and Kaopaque =
=3D
20; and the newest and best now being made by Standard Ceramic Supply of =
=3D
Pittsburgh, their number 600. Forget about the old body because you =3D
cannot get Kaopaque 20 and any substitution is no longer my old body. =3D
The newest porcelain is so far superior to the old body that you owe it =3D
to yourself to try it. It is extremely user friendly, beginners =3D
immediately throw larger pieces and your loss rate is diminished =3D
drastically. I bisque it at cone 012 because that's all it needs. If you =
=3D
bisque higher, it will have less absorbancy for glazing. It has about a =3D
12.5% total shrinkage and it totally vitreous and translucent at cone 9 =3D
down with cone 10 at 3. People are firing it to cone 6 with great =3D
results and it is beginning to go translucent. It is not a cone 6 body, =3D
so therefore you are underfiring it at cone 6. Any company besides =3D
Standard who advertises my porcelain for sale is not selling my =3D
porcelain. Laguna no longer has permnission to mix it and any substitues =
=3D
with the old formula is not my formula. Standard Ceramic Supply is the =3D
sole maker of Tom Turner Porcelain and ask your distributor to start =3D
selling it. As for the extra pennies, it is well worth it as it throws =3D
better, trims better, is extremly white, and is translucent where thin. =3D
Look at what you get for a one pound mug and ask yourself if the extra =3D
money really matters. I am not on Clayart but am happy to answer any =3D
questions you may have at tt@tomturnerporcelain.com
