Charles E. Rinehimer asked for a reference for Ground Hog Kilns.

Eliot Wigginton (ed.) has a discussion of southern pottery, including
ground
hog kilns. The three books about southern pottery, Raised in Clay,
Turners
and Burners, and Brothers in Clay probably also contain drawings and
descriptions of such kilns. I understand the historic village in
Dallas
operates a ground hog kiln, but that is on the basis of a job
description
posted several years ago. I've never seen it.
=====================
There is indeed a ground hog kiln in Old City Park in Dallas. I've been
in it and photographed the potter loading the shelves for an article in
a (forgotten) magazine. It can easily be seen from St.Paul Ave. across
from the Ambassador Hotel.
