Hi folks,
I was unable to post this on ClayArt (I get the digests but my postings
bounce), but perhaps one of the readers here can help (or forward this =3D
to
Mel Jacobson or post it to Clay Art for me). I would appreciate it =3D
greatly.

I just obtained a Gare electric kiln modified using Mel's method to fire
using a propane bunsen burner for reduction. The inside & elements were
coated with ITC, but there are a few places where the coating has come =3D
off
the elements. The seller says they fired reduction 5 times.

1-If I fire it reduction as is, will these small uncoated spots burn out =
=3D
the
elements?

2-Assuming the answer to my first question is yes, can I recoat the bare
spots using a brush with ITC even though the elements are no longer new? =
=3D
I'd
rather not install new elements before seeing if I am happy firing =3D
reduction
indoors using the hood & vent.

3-Do I need to prepare the bare metal in some fashion to get the ITC to
adhere?

Thanks for all your advice & assistance. I'm really excited about =3D
finally
getting to fire reduction in my basement studio w/o having to build a =3D
large
outdoor kiln. I have a hood with exhaust fan so I'll be able to vent the
fumes to the outdoors.

No matter what the venting arrangements - firing in a basement is
inherently hazardous and at the very least warrants Carbon Dioxide and
Carbon Monoxide monitors be installed. Preferably those types that have
audible warning systems in them. It would be even better if the basement
had a positive venting system to go with the exhaust system for the kiln.

Just my $0.02
