If you can handle the overpowering smell of cloves, Zim's Crack Cream works
wonders. It was developed specifically for cement workers.

Corn husker's lotion is good to put on at night, just before bed.

Depends on when you want to apply it - I use "Bag Balm" in the morning,
an hour or more BEFORE going to the studio, work it into the nails
wells, then over the hands; drink coffee, eat breakfast, wash hands (to
remove residual goo) the go to the studio. Aquaphor is also good.
Neither of them are creams, they are ointments. I have severe psoriasis
on the hands, with bad nails, so this extreme regime works well for me.
Hands have never been nicer!

A mix of vaseline, baby powder (unscented talc is better) and a few
drops of melaleuca or tea tree oil works wonders.

There is a small company in homer, ak, that makes organic soaps and lotions
etc,
anyway the best kept secret is called Cottenwood Balm.

This stuff is fantastic ! I use it at night on really clean hands (i use an
old
talisman brush to scrub) and i also use whenever my hands feel a little dry=
.

I works great on my dry cuticles also... It is a little greasy so i don't
keep
it in the studio, (bisque and all that) any way

The company is called Alpenglow and you can find it on the net.

good luck ,
kris bliss

Dear Elaine,

For years now I have relied on Aqueous Cream. It is a non-greasy cream that
places a layer of oil on the skin's surface and keeps water from evaporatin=
g
from the skin.
For me it has been a life saver because I have very dry skin, which as I ge=
t
older gets drier, and I have always been plagued by splits in my fingers an=
d
hands for which it has been VERY effective!
I also have some which contains 5% Cetrimide, a mild but effective
antiseptic which goes under the title of Cetraflex, but I expect there are
others similar to that in your part of the world.

Hi Elaine,

I like 'Dionne' ( like the Quintuplets ) Medicated Udder Balm.

Any Farm and Feed Store ought to have it.

Guess we all have our favourites! I still like plain old Vaseline
Intensive Care lotion extra strength. It's cheap, very available, and not
greasy.

One trick with it that I really like is using it to get plaster off my
hands. When I work with plaster I stir it with my hands and it can leave
them really rough. I found that if I 'washed' them in Vaseline Intensive
Care lotion, the lotion removed all the embedded plaster and made it easy
to wash off. Then a bit more lotion and my hands were ready for.... well,
maybe not my bridge club.... but most everything else.

Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme. It's made for your cuticles, but I
find it works wonders massaged into dry skin (do it at night, before you go
to bed, and in a few days you should notice a difference)!

Other Burt's Bees stuff is good, too, but that's my fave. :)

Do you have brand names? This seems like a catagory.

What do the baby powder and tea tree oil do? And how do you add the baby
powder. Sounds messy.

I've been using something I read on Clayart ages ago.

I rince my hands well, pat dry and then rub them with a little bio
vinegar, pat dry again and then apply a few drops of good olive oil and
work that into the knuckles, cuticles and dry areas.

The "Brand Name" is that; Aqueous Cream BP.

BP stands for "British Pharmacopoeia"

This is the authoritative collection of standards for medicines in the UK.
The standards are legally enforceable in the UK and in most of the
commonwealth.

More often than not they begin life as patented products, but when that
patent runs out they can than be made to BP specs and often sold much more
cheaply than original.

Needless to say this is sometimes resented by the manufacturers, and there
is a "thing" going on with the makers of a well know anti-indigestion
preparation who have so say "improved" the product just before the patent
ran out, and renewed the patent.

It goes without saying the product concerned it NOT cheap!!!

I have had trouble with dry, cracked skin on my hands ever since I was a
kid, and needless to say, it is aggravated by almost every thing we do in
studio clay. I thought Earth Therapeutics Hand Remedy was the best thing I
had ever found, and I recommended it on Clayart within the last year. But
now, I am having better luck with Trader Joe's regular hand cream - the
stuff that comes in the big white pump-dispensing bottles with the red
lettering. I have a bottle at the kitchen sink, in the bathroom, and by th=
e
sink in my studio. Since I got in the habit of putting it on after I wash
my hands or shower, I ma having a lot less dry skin problems.
