Hello Monica:
I love my L&L easy fire I ordered it with 3" brick and heavier element. I h=

Monica...
When I was pricing out a major purchase for the local college (spray
booth and six wheels), I found that Bennett Pottery Supply was the
cheapest by far, saving many hundreds of dollars (purchase price plus
shipping). Same scenario when I purchased my Laguna spray booth for
my own studio; Bennett was hundreds of dollars less than anyone else.
Their ad is in every issue of Ceramics Monthly, right up near the
front of the magazine. Worth getting a quote from them once you
decide what you want.
For your ware cart, there are many inexpensive solutions. I made my
own out of some metal and particle board shelving units from a home
center store. I welded an angle iron frame for the shelving unit to
rest on, bolted some inexpensive locking and swiveling casters from
Harbor Freight to the frame, then screwed the shelving unit to the
frame. Total cost for everything was less than $50 per unit. You can
see a picture of two of them in use on my flickr page:
www.flickr.com/photos/jamesfreemanstudio . Click on the "studio
photos" button if you don't want to scroll down through the other
photos.
All the best.

Hi Monica,
I have an L&L. My last L&L lasted over 25 years and probably would
have lasted longer if I wanted to do the upkeep. (I gave it to a
friend who is still using it!) I recommend L&Ls simply because the
element liners really protect the brick, making the kiln last longer.

Ditto what James Freeman said----I bought my Skutt kiln from Bennett
after pricing it all over. I saved hundreds.
FWIW I'm happy with my Skutt KM 1027-3 (3 inch walls). It's listed as
a ^10 kiln but I have never fired it beyond ^6.
However, I'm a hobbyist; I fire about a dozen times a year. I've had
the kiln thirteen years; I had to replace the thermocouple once and
that was recently.
I have had very little occasion to use Skutt customer service, haven't
needed to call them recently. I was annoyed at first that they didn't
have an 800 number to call. It was costly to call long distance from
here on the East coast to Skutt on the West coast and they always put
me on hold............ However, they answered my emails promptly.
Apparently now all their tech support is done via email.
There are no problems with the kiln itself---it fires perfectly,
witness cones attest to that. My problems early on had to do mostly
with set-up and programming.
Someone remarked that a kiln is like a toaster; I think it's more like
an oven---a big box that you bake things in. It needs to be well
insulated, have an accurate thermostat and heat control mechanism and
the manufacturer has to be accessible. The user's responsibility is to
RTFM and "bake" and maintain according to directions.
So I imagine that the kilns mentioned on the List are all alike,
varying only in size, shape, capacity and heat control mechanism---or
am I missing something here? They are all boxes that bake.
I don't remember now why I chose Skutt; it may simply have been
Bennett's price :-)

My L&L is about three years old now. I probably fire 25-30 times a y=3D

mostly to ^05 or ^06 bisque and "6 glaze -- almost always with hold and a=

slow downfire. Inside, it looks about the same as it did out of the crat=

I believe it is almost impossible for even the most careful person to loa=

kiln without making some shelf-wall contact. In a school setting I am su=

that is compounded a thousand times over. In my opinion the hard element=

holders L&L has go a long way to protect the interior and are a disti=3D

advantage over their competitors -- especially for school settings.
My vote would be for an L&L with controller, backup timer, heavy duty=3D
elements and 3" wall.
