barium in red earthenware

Dear Clayarters,

For some time I've wanted to use a red earthenware body to make some
forms to put in my fresh water aquarium. The color of wet terra cotta is
so beautiful! I keep pulling back because I know some (if not all) of
the commercial bodies contain a little barium to prevent scumming. My
question is, obviously, will the barium poison my fish? I have a feeling
that firing a bit high, say to c2, would vitrify the body enough to make
it safe but I'm not willing make my prize cichlids into an experiment.

Has anyone tried this, or if not, does anyone know the answer?

Thanks, and happy holidays,

Joe Davis
