www.priceline.com you bid, you win. no garauntee what you will get,
but if you say a little prayer to william shatner - it works. I was
shocked, actually, since I believe very little of what I see on tv.
but I guess from now on when it involves captain kirk and fighting
like a ninja I am going to go with it... (which might get me into a
LOT of trouble if the advertisers figure this out).

you have to click on "hotels" and "name your own price" and then you
take it from there. you can click what level (stars) of hotel you are
willing to take, what part of the city, etc. then you sign your life
away and hope for the best. they will give you an answer right away -
yes or no. bid low, if you don't win, get the wife to do it in her
name, or try again tomorrow. read the fine print, so you make the
best choices. I started my bids on 4 star hotels and then moved down
to three stars. then had to try the next day since they only let you
bid once per day per area of a city at a given star level.

center city is not all that big, and as long as it is not raining, the
walking is good. worst case you might be a mile or so away and have
to catch a cab? not so bad when you are saving about 50% off the
published price.

I paid about $50/night the other day for three nights at the holliday
inn on 4th and arch streets on priceline.com. who'd have known old
billy shat would come through for me? nice price and the location is
awesome - sort of equidistant between the convention center and my
favorite bars. the only downside is that they don't have a pool.
