cone 5 matt

Hi,
I'm interested in finding a good satin or matt, not sure the difference, in
the cone 5 range, that I can add colorants to. I also prefer working with
red clays it seems. I have not mixed glazes yet, but at the rec center,
they use mostly glossy glazes. I like the look of the bright colors and the
50's dishware (execept in matt), kind of bright pastel colors. I'm not sure
if what I'm looking for is available in cone 5 range or if its a more
suitable low fire phenomenon. I want the bowls to be chip and scratch
resistant, but I like bright matt colors. Also, am interested in a matt
mailoica for cone 5 if there is one. Why cone 5? I guess for the strength
again, but what do I know. I'm a newbie, as you call it.

I actually did not want to focus much on glazing until I got a better
handle on form, but one of my objectives is to work with decorative
surface, ie, maiolica and carved adn/or relief surfaces. Of course, finding
glaze treatments for the latter is another story, ones that will enhance
surface particularly around the recessed areas.

In terms of stains, I've heard that DeGussa stains have bright colors.
Anyone have experience with them? Do they work best with low fire?

Thanks,

Centa,
Since you're just starting out, make things easy and buy your colorants
ready made. Many Duncan EZ strokes used over raw majolica glaze fire up to
cone 5 even though they aren't intended for that use.
