raising glaze pre-mixed glaze temps

I have acquired newish pint jars of Spectrum and AMACO cone 04/05 glazes in
lovely colors. I would like some thoughts on what glaze components might be
added to alter these glazes (if possible) to cone 4/5 or 5/6. I'm sticking
to commercial glazes for the moment. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I have selected a variety of AMACO _underglazes_, however, and tested them
on white stone (if that makes a difference) at cone 6; it practically "ate"
up all the reds and most of the greens. Seeing Lori's question, I was
wondering if there is anything that can be done to actually make them
"stick". Will mixing them with each other do anything? Out of the jar,
it's pretty much WYSIWYG at cone 04/05 (their rating); will it be true also
for when they are mixed?

TIA

Faye,
I have been working with amaco velvets and ug's for about 5 years now and
at cone 05 they give me what I want and will work much like mixing tempera
paints. i.e. there is an unlimited pallete at this range. Mayco and
Duncan work well at this temp too.

I am using Duncen under glazes of c.c and e-z series.
usualy fires them to ^03 with commercial transparent glaze
or to cone 6-7 covered with the folowing glaze:
(glaze 14 from Bezalel academy ,Jerusalem)

soda feldspar 37
ball clay 5
quarts 23
whiting 20
barium carb. 9
zinc ox. 3
dolomite 2

According to my experience the covering glaze composition
play major part with under-glaze appearance. this glaze enccourge
warm colors and is better over white clay.
It works with most of Duncen underglazes , It probably will do the
same with Amaco.

Hi,

I have had my hands in clay for only 3 months and having much fun :). I can
probably have someone help me mixing the glaze (thank you for the recipe);
however, I cannot recognize whether or not the glaze is food safe or not at
this stage. Could you please let me know? TIA

The following glaze has some problems - it may be too short of silica to be
stable at cone 6 or 7 - it has barium in it - the expansion is high so it
will craze on most bodies - and it has zinc which is not one of the oxides
recommended for red underglaze.

There are lots of glazes that will work for reds and greens - can someone
post a glaze they know will work.
