Dolita,

Randy Brodnax and Don Ellis put on one of the best ceramic shows I've ever
seen, and plus there's a ton of content in their workshops. These are
knowledgeable, entertaining, sharing, caring, excellent teachers!

The video is great, but a live workshop is even better!

Subject: NCECA-a bit long

Well, it is over. Can't say it was the best NCECA ever but I did
have some unparalleled experiences. First it was great to connect
with old Clayart buds, unfortunately being scattered hither and yon
this time means I missed many others. It just kills me that I did
not get to have a snort of Woodford with Tony but there were other
buds with whom I gladly shared! Certainly did not go to waste. As
far as the work I saw, Lorna Meadon is my new love. It could change
tomorrow but for this minute, she rocks my world!
And now to the important part. I really want to thank Mel for his
efforts in setting up the visit to Steve Tobin's and Kelly Savino for
being so gracious as to agree to let me ride out there with her.
Half way there I was getting miffed at having made the decision to go
as we got stuck in traffic, then Kelly was running out of gas, then I
was feeling car sick, then...well, then we were there and within
seconds of stepping foot in Steve's gallery/warehouse I knew I was in
for something special. It is difficult to put into words what I felt
but I knew I was in the presence of something wondrous and, at the
same time, accessible. Almost more than my emotions could handle.
Does that make sense? Steve Tobin is probably the most brilliant
person I have ever met. I mean really...when Stephen Hawking sends
his assistant to see what someone is up to...well, what can I add to
that. Imagine my shock when I realized that Steve was actually
giving each of us one of his smaller blown up pieces. It took so
long for it to sink in that I was the one of the last people to the
table. Most of the pieces were gone so I was just going to select
one that was left and be grateful. I turned my head to say something
to someone and turned back to the table and there it was...the
perfect piece. Don't know how it appeared but it did. Maybe someone
put it back, don't know, but it is mine now and I could not be
happier. I bought pieces at NCECA but this is the most precious.
The other great experience was running smack into Don Ellis and Randy
Brodnax, two guys who have heavily influenced my work lately. They
are the sweetest two guys you want to meet. I even embarrassed
myself by getting my pic taken with them. They loved it though. I
had a pic of a piece of Don's work in my photo file for years and did
not know who it was until I bought the video 'Pottree'. Rather
serendipitous I would say.
Again, thank you Mel. And Kelly, I hope everything works out OK with
your car.

Love to all,
