Well, it was not the best one for me either. I could not really lay my fing=

Speaking to many others, it seems that the shows was too far spread out. I =
=3D
miss opportunities to see full "clean" ceramics shows and there were mis pr=

that guy's lights. Nothing wrong with that, but I found myself many times m=

I felt in some way disconnected to the whole NCECA experience and I am not =
=3D
sure if I could have done it better than I did . Maybe my planning was just=

On the other hand, lots were going on in the clayart room, often on a one o=

Hello all:

I did not want to pay to go into NCECA. My plan was to go to all the
gallery openings and loiter at the Clayart room, see my friends, use
the hotel swimming pool and go home.

The Clayart room was fantastic. Everybody has so much to share and I
have very engaging conversations the whole time. After I went to Steve
Tobin's studio, I decided I didn't even need to rush to the galleries
the next day! The experience was that good and I wanted to leave some
room in my brain with nothing else to override it.

Thanks to everyone who organized, shared and being there.

A few picts from the trip:-

P.S. Found out I can forget about the swimming pool during spring
break... too many screaming kids.

And I had just the opposite experience.
I realized from the last NCECA in Phoenix it was ridicules to try and do it
all, or even most of it.
Without a car and deciding not to do the shuttlebus, I knew I wasn't going
to any shows beyond what I could walk to.

I went to a couple of the NCECA lectures/presentations but found myself
nodding off - maybe if they had something to say...

I decided to spend more time in the Clayart room reconnecting with folks an=
=3D
d
attending the presentations/workshops held there - all were great!
Then of courses the best show at NCECA - Strictly Functional!!

The few shows in the Marriot next to convention center seemed to be enough
for me - satisfied my esthetic needs.

But the highlight was visiting Steve Tobin's studio!
Just that experience made NCECA for me.

I'm thinking if I go to Tampa, I may purchase a one-day pass to visit the
vendors hall and that will be it as far as NCECA,
The rest of the time it will be shows and Clayart.
Already thinking about next year's Clayart room - how about a presentation
on understanding and developing esthetically pleasing wheel thrown forms?

Bill,

I fully agree with what you said about the NCECA experience. You did not
mention these, but I found the demos in the vendors' hall were great and mu=
ch
more interesting than the official simultaneous ones.

The Clayart Room with the Strictly Functional Show, the great demos, and
the wonderful exchanges were wonderful and fully satisfying. As always, the
Clayart group was a wonderful experience. Met old friends, got to know some
people better, and made new friends.

With the Strictly Functional Show, which was terrific, and the ones in the
Marriot, I was fully satisfied.

I think your idea for Tampa is very interesting. I hope more of us will
agree with you.

I missed most of Elizabeth's brush painting workshop (more's the pity), but
I had to leave, so I hope she will give one again next year, and I hope I
will be in Tampa.

It was nice talking to you more at length than ever before.

Thanks to all of you who worked hard to set up the Clayart
room. It was beautiful.

Jon Singer pulled glaze samples from the pockets of his long
coat. He shone a light on them for my son, Patrick, and me.
I asked Jon, "What are your favorite pieces here?"

"I don't believe in favorite pieces, but I'll show you the
ones I find most interesting." Jon then walked Patrick and
me through the Clayart room, picking up cups and bowls and
commenting on each like a tour guide. Thanks, Jon.

Elizabeth and Marci are excellent teachers. I sat in on
their Chinese brush painting and china painting demos.

Thanks to all of you who participated in my kiln maintenance
demo on Thursday. I enjoyed the informality, open
discussion, and laughter.

The Clayart group picture was special. I enjoyed watching
everyone squeeze in close for it. I will share the pictures
after I download them from my camera.

Jennifer Quarles won a Paragon Digital FireFly kiln in the
raffle that we held at our booth. I dialed three cell phone
numbers before I finally contacted her. (I thought one of
the numbers she had written was a 3, then an 8. It was
actually a 5.) Congratulations, Jennifer.

Thanks, Mel, for producing the kiln book and for all your
efforts with Clayart. I especially enjoyed your
participation in the kiln maintenance demo.

Sincerely,

Arnold Howard
