what is a gallery and buying wholesale

updated sat 10 jan 98

I'm interested in learning what the word "gallery" connotes to people in
reference to selling pottery. I'm assuming it is fairly subjective, but since
I'm very new to the world of "art and craft" maybe there are some unwritten
guidelines about what is meant by a "gallery." This is important to me
because we are planning to open a shop that sells pottery, ours as well as
others, and a small selection of other hand crafted items. I'm more
interested in this from the angle of the artists/crafts people so that I can
represent our shop appropriately to those whose work we might like to carry.
I figure the public perception is a marketing issue.

By the way, we are planning to purchase wholesale the wares we wish to carry.
This will be a very small retail outlet, about 350 sq. feet. Is there some
minimum amount wholesalers expect shop owners to buy at a time? What size
orders are exhibitors at the big wholesale shows expecting to get? How far in
advance do you usually have to order items from the craftsperson? Any input
along these lines would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,

I am interested in the difference between Subjective and Objective in
art. I hear these words all the time, but have no idea what their
application to art means.

Hi Cathe,
I wholesale to both shops and galleries. In my opinion the difference
between the two has a lot to do with the quality of the work displayed and
its presentation and what else is sold there. The galleries I enjoy
providing work for present the work itself in a straight forward manner
where the work itself can be appreciated in a visually calm atmosphere where
everything for sale is handmade and there are no sales gimmicks etc.
All the work sold is handmade and well made.

My minimum order is $200 - $300. Orders placed at least a couple of months
in advance give me the opportunity to produce those items in coordination
with other work making production more efficient. When it comes time to
ship I can repay this thoughtfulness on the part of my customer as I choose
which work to send them.
