Hey, the latest barium dust up got me thinking why I couldn't find my
supply of barium yesterday when I was putting my chemicals back up on
my shelves. I may have never purchased any. I only fire to cone 6 ox
anyway, so I went to my H&H and I read something interesting.
Barium carbonate will form the barium crystals that are so yummy when
there is at least a little bit of reduction. What say the glaze
maestros on the list? I was wondering if barium glazes really work
well at cone 6 ox and if strontium carb. has the same need of a slight
reduction in order to react properly. H&H confused me as directly
after their explanation of the need for some reduction they present a
Cooper barium glaze for oxidation. Drr.
Interesting stuff. Oh yeah, while I was putting my chemicals in their
new containers and organizing things I noticed I had enough manganese
to kill a horse.

Taylor...
I'm certainly not a glaze maestro, but I use barium carbonate in cone
6 electric kiln firings. I get the same wonderful surfaces I used to
get in cone 10 reduction gas firings.
For whatever it may be worth.
