I received a PDF copy of Mel's book to review. I will be honest and I
can tell ya I look forward to reading it. I am off to Italy and then 2
days home and off to Alberta so the next 3 weeks will be action
packed but airports and planes can't keep me away from it. I have
always been a fan of things that work. Olsen and Rhodes book on kilns
were all I had and they were full of ratios and formulas and no brick
plans of kilns that work and have worked consistently for a potter.
When I first got a hold of Nil's plans on the Minnesota Flat Top in
Studio Potter that actually had brick plans I built one and it was the
heart beat of my studio for many years. I couldn't have figured out
the ratios and formulas to get a kiln that would fire properly right
from the git go.
I haven't jumped into Mel's book as of tonight but as far as the
wood firing guys in there so far- if you want a fast fire what better
guy than David Hendley- he has fired his with saleable pots for many
years and the train guy Ted Neal former tech at USU has built some of
the best firing trains in North America. These two guys alone are
worth the price of admission.
The life of a potter has enuff surprises without building a kiln that
wears you and your bank account out.
I promise Mel a review within the month. I love wheels and kilns. I
wish I had a collection of old and new wheels and kilns.
If this book is what I am hoping for it will be required reading at
Sheridan. Required reading means you own the book and the pages are
folded and covered in clay and dirt from constant referral.
Cheers,
Tony
