refiring wood fired pots in an electric kiln

updated wed 12 may 10

Hi Folks,
I recently unloaded a kiln full of wood fired pots. I got great flashing
and ash effects in the hottest parts of the kiln at cones 9-11 and likewis=
e
in the lower ash laden cone 7-8 sections.
I use either indigenous clays or very high ball clay content clays that
flash best at about cone 8.
Unfortunately, although the clay is well reduced and flashed, it was loaded
into the back of the kiln and is, therefore, really immature. It probably
went to cone 4.
Any ideas regarding the value of refiring in an electric kiln to cone 8-9.
It will be quite a while before my next wood firing and I have a good
market for pieces like this right now.
Mature stuff can be seen on my web page in a section called "May Firing
2010."
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I refire in gas and soda with good effect. It would be worth a try.
Certainly, you can put them in the woodkiln for a second try too.

Bruce -

I asked this same question back in November I think. I did refire a bunch
of pieces in my electric kiln, with generally good effects. My concern was
that I would "unreduce" pieces that had some reduction, either to clay or t=
o
glaze (I was firing a shino glaze, a shino flashing slip, and bare stonewar=
e
with varying amounts of iron.

I held the electric kiln at cone 10 for a half hour, wanting to be sure all
ash had melted but not wanting to go much past cone 10. The wood kiln had
only reached 1900 degrees likely due to chimney height. Nils later posted
on this topic.

It appeared that I did not lose reduction effects, but all the ash melted,
and I was pleased with the pieces. Of course, I have many more pieces that
did not receive sufficient reduction or ash effects in the wood kiln to be
worth firing in electric, and so those will be refired in wood soon.

Could you put those "under reduced" pots in the top of the electic and
then pull them at temp and put them in reduction materials?
