Hello Clayart members I am in need of your assistance.
I am moving to Hawaii, to the big island, Kailua-Kona
area.
Could anyone please give me some guidance on where and how
to find clay on
the Hawaiian Isles?
When I lived on the Big Island 20 years ago, the Hawaiians
believed that the goddess Pele became angry at anyone who
removed soil, sand, or rocks from the island. The belief was
so engrained that even outsiders accepted it.

Sincerely,

Check with the U. of Hawaii, Ceramics Dept. or get ahold of David
Kuraoka at San Francisco State University. You can probably Google S.F.
State & get to the faculty. Mike Gordon

If you google hawaii potters guild you will get info
on a very vital group of potters dedicated to clay. they were
started in 1967 in honolulu and are mostly women, but they
are friendly anyway. I've had the pleasure of doing a couple
workshops for them--kiln building mostly.=3D20
they get their clay and supplies from Ceramics Hawaii in honolulu.
The university of hawaii on oahu and the big island would be
another source of connection. they have a very active clay community
on maui as well as glass blowing up in the central valley. some of the
best windsurfing as well.
