silicon carbide post question

updated mon 21 jun 10

Has anyone used the solid tube-shaped silicon carbide posts from
Euclid's? They're 1.75" diameter and come in various heights. I'm
wondering if 10" posts will warp in wood/salt. I've had trouble
finding suitable posts for the front of my train kiln - several have
warped and caused the front shelves to fall forward.

Dear DeBorah Goletz,

You ask <<. I'm wondering if 10" (Silicon Carbide posts will warp in
wood/salt. >>

In my experience of gas firing using Salt, Sodium Chloride, with Silicon
Carbide Shelves is that there will be corrosion of the Silicon Carbide.
Without a protective coating and at high temperatures this could be severe.

This is supported by information in L.A.Lay, "Corrosion Resistance of
Technical Ceramics", National Physical Laboratory. ISBN 0-11-480051-0. who
reports severe corrosion with fused alkali carbonates, Hydroxides and
Halogen Salts as low as 500 deg C

I'm curious as to what you used for tall posts near the throat arch. Last =

year I decided to go the expense and ordered a couple hundred soaps, standa=

ront with no problem twice. I can easily cut one in half, set the smooth si=

des together, wad the top for level and get a 14" space. However, I found i=

t might be better to load the front with shorter shelves and a tighter sett=

ing to make my flame go up to the crown. Since I have so many extra soaps I=
=3D
'm thinking of filling in along the front shelves with extra posts to act a=

s a bag wall and force the flame up along the top of the chamber instead of=
=3D
doing all its work on a few pieces up front and flying along the floor out=

the stack. I would imagine post for post in small quantities silicon carbi=

hardware store in Norway because he gets them from my first brick
guy so if I need more I know better now.
