Wet clay offers almost limitless opportunities for the creation of form
and the development of surface texture. Pottery-making allows us the
opportunity to funnel these creative possibilities into a format that
engages the viewer and enlivens our lives and homes. During this
workshop, we will explore these possibilities and experiment with a
variety of tools and techniques, both on and off the wheel.
=3D20
The format of the workshop will repeatedly shift from demo and
discussion to hand-on participation and back again. This will provide
the participants with the opportunity to see a demonstration and then
immediately put the information to use. The focus will be on the
throwing, altering and surfacing of wet and leather-hard clay objects.
=3D20
In addition to the demonstrations, there will be a variety of lectures
and discussions on design and design theory, color theory, and the use
of layering to create complex and interesting surfaces. We will also
look at images of a range of historic pots (and other objects) to
provide insight on ceramic history and how ideas migrate and evolve over
time.
=3D20
Students will not create any finished work in the workshop, but instead
will leave with a lot of sketches, damp pots, notes, photos, handouts,
and enough ideas to keep them thinking for a long time.=3D20

bring a sketch book and a bag lunch.
