I initally learned to make pots on plaster bats (batts?). In my first studi=
=3D
o we didn't want plaster, so made some plywood bats which we attached with =

clay -no one had thought of bat pins back then. Then we would get commissio=

ns for 2000-3000 small pots for a candle maker, so we learned how to pick t=
=3D
hem off with hands, I then realized that large pots can be picked off also.=
=3D
.. In my first teaching job I found a pair of pot lifters in the studio and=
=3D
tried them; I found that they mucked up the bottom of the pot and using my=

hands was much easier and left a nice bottom from the cut. Some people lik=

e the "shell" mark by cutting as the wheel turns; I prefer a nice arc. I th=

rew the pot lifters away. Part of my teaching was for the students to learn=

to use their hands... I also poo-pooed the Giffin grip, as I don't trim my=
=3D
work with the exception of bowls. Then a couple of years ago I got an invi=

tation from AKAR to send work for their yunomi exhibition. I was
told that a yunomi had a trimmed foot, but my rims were not even and it wa=

s cumbersome and unstable to use a wet-chuck or foam on the wheelhead, so I=
=3D
got a Giffin Grip and put a small piece of foam to stabilize the lip and g=

ot the pieces trimmed... So far I have trimmed about 12-15 pots (yunomis) w=

ith the gadget. My most useful gadget is a sand bag which I use on slabs, c=

ompresses the clay, eliminates the memory (sort of like demagnetizing magne=

tic tape), reduces cracking and warping. I used to use the heel of my hand =
=3D
until a Japanese friend showed me the sandbag...=3D0A-Rimas=3D0A=3D0A--- On=
