Thanks all,

I was tired and forgot to mention they are old cedar shakes from my sister'=
s roof. I was going to offer them to any local potters if they were of any=
use. If anyone is interested we are just West of Port Angeles Washington =
near Joyce.

Later,
Chris

I'd imagine they might be useful in primitive firing.

It may have been stated elswhere that cedar has a lot of volatile
commpounds. As the shingle ages In the hot sun or with a heated space belo=
w
these volatiles evaporate. So the older the shingle the lower the fuel
value.
I've used scraps from shake and shingle mills (new wood) and fired to ^9/1=
0
but older wood will have less utility. But if its free it might be worth
the price

I've seen stumps from this cedar 12 foot around left over from fire 500
years ago - no wonder it was held in reverance and awe by indigeneous
peoples - but when it gets cut, it isn't replanted as it grows too slow. It
is a shame and totally criminal in my opinion, as is the harvest of Taxol
yew trees

"To me, human life in all its forms, individual and aggregate, is a
perpetual wonder: the flora of the earth and sea is full of beauty and of
mystery which seeks science to understand; the fauna of land and ocean is
not less wonderful; the world which holds them both, and the great universe
that folds it in on everyside, are still more wonderful, complex, and
attractive to the contemplating mind." - Theodore Parker, minister,
