majolica glazes

updated tue 10 aug 10

I have only recently been added to the list so my apologies if this questio=
n
has been asked recently. I have gotten some very red earthenware clay and
have started making things with the intent of using Majolica glaze on them.
I will be firing cone 05/04 and am looking for a reproducible base glaze
using zircopax for white. I'm planning on using Mason stains for the
colors. Do any of you have a glaze recipe that you would like to share?
Also, any caveats about the process will be much appreciated.

Rodney,

=3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 All you'll ever need can be found in this Lin=
da Arbuckl=3D
e PDF:

examples:

Majolica (Arbuckle) Cone 03 Cone 05
frit 3124 65.8 66.6
F-4 feldspar 17.2 23.0
EPK 10.8 2.3
neph sy 6.2 8.1
100.0 100.0
+ tin 4 4
+ zircopax 9 9
+ bentonite 2 2

+ =3DBD - 3+ tbsp. Epsom salts. to 5 gallons of glaze (flocculates the
glaze for less settling and better application). Smooth, white,
opaque. Colorants w/flux usually applied in a thin wash to raw
glaze surface. Does not move in firing. May crawl if thick in
corners or pinhole over rough-trimmed surfaces. Fire w/small 03
cone in the sitter to give a small 04 tipped to about 2 o'clock in
front of the peep hole. Use of chrome in decoration may cause
sufficient fuming to make the background blush pink in high tin
glazes (above 5%). If this is a problem, drop the tin a bit, and add
that amount x 1.5 of additional zirconium opacifier.

Thanks. Tin is so expensive now that I want to avoid Linda Arbuckle's trie=

d
and true formula. There are several good jumping off places here.

Look for Gail's Majolica in the file above, it fits Ervin Earthenware wel=
=3D
l,
also in the file. I like it. I like it better with a tiny bit of rutile i=
=3D
n it.
You need to test the glaze for your own use. It may not work on your
earthenware. If the glaze is too big... dunts or shivers decrease the
zircopax. If it crazes but just a bit try increasing it.
BTW the Gail is Gail Busch, we are married.

Drop the tin and do a lineblend with your prefered opacifyer.
Not true majolica, but you might get something you can live with.

I would not use raw stains alone. Look at the handout for proper mixt=
=3D
ures.

I have 3 majolica glazes that I use on Rovin's RO-82 terra cotta clay.

I bisque to cone 04, dip the pieces in one of the 3 glazes, and then
glaze fire to cone 1. I prefer the higher glaze firing because it
makes the terra cotta clay more dense and less likely to break.

I use commercial low fire glazes and underglazes over the majolica
glazes and they do not run off the pieces at all at cone 1. The
majolica glazes are all opacified with superpax or zircopax
opacifiers, though they do work well with tin too.

There are links on the recipe page to many images of art works with
this glaze on them.
