clayart dinnerware show proposal?

updated tue 17 aug 10

Hi, All,

Like my friends to the north and several others, dinnerware sets are a
subject that I have waiting in the wings. There are sooo many possible
things to consider about the common dish.

So here is my proposal, How about a Clayart dinnerware display (show if you
want) at NCECA next year. One day only. The common plate, saucer, cup, sala=
d
bowl. All placed within a space 14" deep and 18" wide. Displayed on the
common folding table we get from the hotel - if you want a placemat, napkin=
,
water glass and silverware - your option, but it must fit in the space. No=
t
a fancy gallery setting, think about what you eat dinner from - The potter
must have made the pottery - no points for the rest, but it might help to
see how the whole works. Potter must be present - mail in entries would jus=
t
be too hard to handle - are your dishes mailed to you for dinner?

The whole thing must be minimal - we want to see all the shows too not
babysit pots.

What do you think?????

I'm getting some tentatively supportive emails. Most concern is about havin=
g
enough participation to make it worthwhile.

I'd love to have enough to cover four tables. More would be better. Let us
say that we need commitments for 20 sets to make it happen. I currently hav=
e
firm commitments from 3 potters plus myself.

This is open to all clayarters and for all clayarters. We will welcome
guests to the show, of course.

I know that not everybody sells their work, but many do. Lets just say that
if you have a buyer, go for it but the plates and such must stay in place
until the end of the show. I'll help link up buyers and sellers but you
handle the transaction.

Hi David,

I've been giving these aspects of a dinnerware show a lot of thought. My
concept was that we who make dinnerware would present a sampling of our
work. Clayart is comprised of crafts folk of every level from students in
school to old pros like Mel and the rest of the "50" year old crew. Showing
the various levels could be an important learning experience for all
involved.

The partial goal would be to answer a question we all know well - "I know
where my work fits on such a scale - but just WHAT do I need to move it up =
a
level or two?" By seeing work from folks who are not at all the shows aroun=
d
town and by seeing the work "side-by-side" I would hope that much could be
learned by all.

While I never bother to enter any non juried shows anymore either, I hope
that you and other Pro Potters will see my vision for this and join in. Thi=
s
not to be your normal, gallery type of show. The emphasis is education not
sales - you may get them but that's not the reason for this show. We need
work at the top and we need work at the lower levels where mine is. I know
there are things I need to learn and I hope you will share.

As for folks showing up on time to drop off and pick up - well, remember
that I'm retired Army, I believe in and live by a schedule and a clock. Our
children, call us Law and Grace - my wife is grace. Let's just say you will
not want to be late.... Details may be too horrid to contemplate.

We hope that those who are displaying their work will join us part of the
time it is on display. That everyone will take advantage of this time to
learn from each other and talk about what they are displaying. A show that
has the artist standing beside the work is so much more fun and you get to
talk to each other.

To EVERYBODY

This is a work in process, I've never done this before and I just may stub
my toe. Please feel free with your input and suggestions. Together we can
make this happen. Thanks

Larry,

From Clayart you could easily cover four tables. Quality of the work i=
s
another question. Quantity would certainly be there!

I will commit to enter pieces in a juried competititon for such a show.

Good proposal!
