I plan to experiment with flashing slips in my wood kiln. Never did it befo=
re. I'm looking at 75% Helmars kaolin, 25% feldspar and variations of the H=
elmar's with some iron bearing clays (mostly because I want it to go under =
my nuka). Thinned out, thin applications etc.
I get to cone 12+ in much of my kiln with areas of good fly ash. I imagine =
that they get more porcelain-like surface qualities. There's lots of pics o=
f platters with just flashing slips- is it a nice surface for functional wa=
re with fly ash variation (some areas that are thin)?
Sounds really basic, but I've mostly learned by doing and reading. Thanks!

Please help me correct the spelling of Helmer Kaolin.
I see "Helmar" a lot and that makes it hard for people to
find me
when they want the clay.
I named if for the tiny town where it is mined... Helmer,
Idaho.
Take the mine tour to see what I mean at:

see the description of the clay at:

Thanks,
