Does anyone have any experience with this recipe?
EPK 47
Potash Feldspar 25
Flint 25
Bentonite 3
It is listed as Carlton Ball's C8-11 with a shrinkage of 14.38%
I figure I can make it for about $34.40US for 100 pounds. I am going into
grad school and trying to pinch every penny I can.

Randy -
Tony makes a great deal of sense! A friend has been experiencing cracking
when throwing w/ various porcelains in large pieces, as you describe. So i=
s
now trying Standard's white stoneware. If it performs, it will be good-bye
porcelain for large pieces; if it also cracks, it will be good-bye white
for large work. Hasn't fired so it's too soon to tell. Maybe you want to
consider how important '"really white" is and try a white stoneware before
making a final decision.

We use a similar recipe here.
EPK 50
Silica 20
Custer Feldspar 30
Sometimes we use bentonite 1 . Sometimes we don't.
If you use bentonite expect spotting.
Directions.
If using bentonite slake it into hot water the night before, blunge it in=

the morning.
We use a Soldner mixer.
Add water to the clean mixer or water and bentonite.
Add all of the EPK. Mix as long as you can stand or allow it to sit as sl=

overnight.
Add Custer feldspar until the mix is stiff, adding additional liquid and
spar until the spar is all gone mix until warm.=3D20
Slowly add more liquid until the mix is wet enough to accept the silica. =
=3D
Mix
until warm, add water until too wet to throw and age.
I find that when I use this procedure the amount of time needed for aging=
=3D
is
greatly decreased. I use a similar method for other clays on occasion. =
=3D
I
think it helps loads.=3D20

There are newer, better recipes, out in the world than the ones I use I

Randy what do you want to achieve with your porcelain? Depending on the ans=

Basically I want a good throwing porcelain that I can go large with. By
large I mean over 24" and that stays white. So I am looking for a body that
contains no or very little ball clay and very little bentonite. I had
thought of replacing the EPK with either grolleg or Tile 6. The school I am
going to doesn't carry grolleg or tile 6 but they seem to be willing to
order some. If I make my own clay on campus it is free but if I want
pre-made I must purchase it elsewhere and carry it in. I was also looking
for a clay body that has fewer ingredients. This seemed like a good startin=
g
point.

Hi Randal,
EPK is the whitest I have tests for - certainly whiter than grolleg
and Tile 6 - and Grolleg is expensive.
We did some tests many years ago and 2% bentonite did not change the
colour of any porcelains - get the whitest you can find for starters
(means least amount of iron.)
If you want to throw big get as much ball clay in as you can tolerate
- there are many ball clays - just find the ones with the least amount
of iron - bell dark is one of the best.
If you need help reformulating for the cone you will fire to let me know.

Randy, in that case you should have a good throwing body. I used to throw a=

bout that size (including very wide rim bowls and plates)=3DC2=3DA0and the =
