Dear Claudia;
I was in La Paz, Baja California during 1967_68 building a kiln for an =3D
arts center there which employed teenagers who wanted to learn weaving, =3D
sewing, and pottery. The pottery made by the boys had lovely drawings of =
=3D
their bikes with tassels streaming from the handlebars and captions in =3D
Spanish extolling the virtues of their girlfriends as well as other =3D
sentiments. The academics who visited our gallery after driving down the =
=3D
peninsula were incensed that we did not teach them 'indian drawing'. The =
=3D
fact that there had never been any clay tradition on the Baja Peninsula =3D
did not deter them! They were perfectly willing to insist that we =3D
appropriate themes from other parts of Mexico.
In fact, these simple narrative stories the boys slipped and painted on =3D
their pots were small miracles of originality and joie de vivre. It was =3D
a joy to be around these young men.
Poor academics!
Cheers, Hank

I find it remarkable that anyone can teach 4 year old children to
throw pots as good as an experienced, talented adult. That's an
amazing accomplishment.
Perhaps the photo needed a disclaimer: This photo was shot using
children who were neither harmed nor underpaid. These children are not
working, they are having fun. Kids do that. So should adults.
