ball crawl glazes

Hi Randy
I often use a Ball Crawl glaze over iron rich glazes for an effect I like.
However, I have found at times,
they do indeed flake off and melt on my shelves. I have been more
successful by doing 3 things
Applying the glaze like a yoghurt conistency so that it cracks and fissures
when dried on top of the first glaze, but not
peeling. I try to use as little water as possible to get the glaze very
thick, but not so thick that it peels off.
Then I also apply the crawl as fast as possible on to the first glaze so
that is still moisture in the
glaze underneath. This seems to help the crawl better adhere or attach
itself and dry with less peeling.
I put the work in to the kiln as soon as the crawl is applied as to not mov=
e
the work when the crawl is dried.
Too much of the glaze fall off.

I have just wondered if it would be possible to mix some decoration wax int=
o
the crawl glaze or a glue like
wall paper glue. I will have try this. Sometimes the ball crawls look
adhered when dried in the kiln, but still
flake and peel enough during the firing to fall off. Still, although not
100%, I find using the 3 steps above has
saved my shelves from falling glaze. I have several different recipes I
use, and have not found any differences
in the glazes behavior, but an improvement with my steps. Less water in
glazse, but apply to a still moist glaze
underneath. Move quickly into the kiln and do not move it around again.

Good luck,
Alisa in Denmark
