Hi folks,

It might be helpful to mention again that the
archives at www.reference.com are not that
difficult to use. You won't always find what you
are looking for, but have a good shot of finding
something, especially with regard to glazes,
announcements and general information. Redundancy
is (...oh, I won't get into that.)

On the reference.com web page click the ADVANCED
SEARCH button. On the new page scan down to
ADVANCED PARAMETERS. There, fill in the SUBJECT,
GROUP (Clayart) and month of January at the FROM
(goes back to the beginning of last year). A list
will be provided of previous posts by heading
relevant to your query. Play with the fields and
possibilities.

And as always, please remember to make your
subject headings as succinct as possible. It helps
those of us who need to scan the messages quickly
and facilitates use of the archive.

Thanks to all,
Paul

Greetings:
Although I do use this archive site
http://www.reference.com/cgi-bin/pn/listarch?list=clayart@lsv.uky.edu on
occasion, I personally like the following two archive sites better.

http://www.potters.org/categories.htm
-This site provides an easy to read overview of all major
topics discussed on clayart on one page. Futher 'mouse clicks'
will provide a breakdown of all these topics. This site is great if
you are not sure exactly what you are looking for or you are very
specific in what you want.

http://www.findmail.com/listsaver/clayart/
-This site is my personal favourite regarding the clayart
archieves. You can search by date, author, or subject. A unique
feature also allows a search by thread, either forward or backward
(ie. all posts responding to that post). Some special views (top threads,
top cited url's) are also included.
-If you turn your mail on and off alot like I do, the date
search is great for getting any overview on what you missed.
-The author search is great if you want a complete list by
any clayart contributer (ie. the complete works of "melsan")

My hat is off to the developers of all three sites. A job well done!!!
My 2 cents.
Marc

I still couldn't access the Clayart archives with the" latest" address,

Everyone,

I've been on clayart as long as just about anybody, and I've kept a few
hundred posts going back over 3 years, including enough experience from
John Baymore, Karl Platt, Jack Troy, Linda Arbuckle, and many of the
other legendary greats that I've seriously considering compiling a book
on "The wit and wisdom of Clayart" (and I'll sue the pants off anyone
else who uses that title - except Joe or Richard. So there!).

Seriously, I've got loads of emails. Some are not so recent because topics
do repeat and I haven't saved every iteration of every discussion. The
posts I saved are ones of personal interest (more or less everything to
do with producing cone 10 stoneware - there are raku and low fire glaze
recipes too, but not as many - in a gas kiln - sorry electric folks!)
but it occurred to me that I kind of have a baby archive right on my PC.

So, here's the deal. If someone will seriously make all of these available
through some kind of archive/web page/whatever, I'll ftp the zip file to
you so you can pick it apart and post it. The zip file is over 11MB and
contains 34 mailboxes.

The catch is that the entire collection is of Eudora mail folders. Unless
you're an email guru you'll probably need Eudora to read it.

Serious offers only. Let me know how you'll organize the information
and provide *on-going* access to everyone. I'm not in a position to email
copies to everyone, or to give general ftp access to a file that size, so
please
don't email asking for a copy because I can't just send it out. Whoever
is currently running an active archive will be given first right of
refusal since you're already "in the business".

Let me know.

Richard

Desiree,
I spent four months thinking I was on or doing clayart every day, and it turns
out I was at that URL, not really registered in clayart (dumb me). I would go
there everyday and forward to the current day and read the lists. Couldn't
figure out WHY it always started back in November. Anyway, Mishy on mIRC
finally straightned me out, so you guys can blame her. It has changed
recently though, there used to be a button to skip straight to the end (most
current), thats gone on lmy screen now. Earl Brunner

Came across this site and have been having a great time reading posts from
last year. You might want to check it out if you are looking for subject
strings or posts by date as well as author.

Enjoy.

It seems as if there are quite a few new clayarters lately, so maybe it
would be helpful to post the clayart archives url's, for searching the
thousands of previous messages - a real treasure trove of information:

www.potters.org/categories.htm
www.egroups.com/list/clayart
www.reference.com

I use the first one, but just checked the other two to see if they still
exist, and egroups looks quite good. It used to be www.findmail.com.

The other key internet address for clayarters is at San Diego State:

http://art.sdsu.edu/ceramicsweb/

This has the glaze and materials databases, and lots of links to other sites.

I don't think those addresses are in the periodic moderator's message, but
I couldn't seem to find one to check that for sure, so hopefully I'm not
duplicating.

Christine,

The urls for the Clayart Archives are:

www.reference.com

For the last one, enter Clayart in the search field. I personally like the
first one best.

I am just completely frustrated. Have been searching for "weird matt" by

I am going to guess it is high fire...I couldn't see a cone listed.

Nepheline Syneite 10
Lithium carb 15
Gerstley borate 25
Bone ash + 4.0%
Barium carb 10
Rutile 15
Soda Ash 25
Red iron ox + 4%

I hope that helps...bamboo karen

This looks like something I would try , mixed thin, as a fluxing wash to the
outside of a pot when I didn't want a real glaze. For a high fire glaze I
would expect more flint and clay. If someone uses this in a normal
thickness, high fire, let us know.

On the list of glazes I have...
tough to read but it looks like it is oxidation or reduction
satin to glossy matt- multi-color breaks

but I do not see a temperature...it is near both
cone 9 and cone 04...so there is no indication of temp.
by the sequence in the list of glazes...so it will require
tests...
It seems there was a book of Val Cushing glazes published
at Alfred...but I forget the source. I would think it would
be a treasure of info.
hope that helps

Hi,
Yes the orange creamy matt is an oxidation glaze, and a very pretty one.
Do not apply too thin. Mia

Wade Blocker on tue 4 sep 01

Susan,
I am not familiar with the glaze you posted. My guess, with all that
lithium and soda ash, that it is a cone 5-6 glaze. I would try it on the
inside of a little bowl in order not to ruin your kiln shelf. Re the
atmosphere, my guess is as good as yours. I would try electric kiln firing
and see what happens. Mia in ABQ

Sometimes it seems a little 'glitchy', when I type in
keywords for something I know is there and it returns
no answers. Generally I do the same search again a
minute later, and it all comes up.

I typed in for 'words': 6 or six and glaze
and got 15,000 hits.

So I added to it: white
and got it down to 2300 hits.

So I typed in the 'subject' search: glaze
and got it down to 900 hits.

So I removed 'glaze' from the word search and added
'opaque', since most people don't want transparent
whites. This helped weed out references to white clay,
and got a pretty manageable 91 hits.

Some of these will still be irrelevant, and I
certainly excluded some good ones, but it's a start.

Another good way to search for glazes in the archives
is to enter under 'sender': alisa or ababi, (or any
other folks who've mainly posted glaze recipes).

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to Clayart. What fun. Addictive. Been "doin" clay for almost 30 yrs. but getting clay info via the internet is a whole new thing for me. I'm still pretty computer illiterate. I mention the 30yrs.so you old timers will know I've paid my dues, at least in part. Not looking for a free ride, but how nice of so many of you to be willing to take the time to help a fellow potter. So, my question is, what are the archives I've heard refered to? How do I access them? Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi,
I seem to remember that there was a clayart archive ( not the one that
is at the bottom of Mel's web site ) but it had subjects ( kilns, for
instance ) listed with comments ranked by date, I think, and there was
a small yellow / orange sun image in upper right corner. Anybody
remember or am I out of it? Help. Mike Gordon

I would appreciate it very much if someone could tell me how to access the
archives. I have followed the mederator's instructions but I'm obviously doing
something wrong because they don't work.

Thanks in advance,

Please e-mail Professor Richard Burkett at San Diego State
University (SDSU) for information on Clayart's early days. Burkett and
Prof. Joe Marino (sp??) financed the startup of Clayart in 1993 (I think!)
and it took on permanent form by 1995 (the year I joined). Early on, there
was a need for more server space but Joe & Rick were not funded well
enough to buy extra space.
I think (but am not sure) that daily postings began to be archived
sometime after 1996 when Am. Ceramic Soc. became involved. Prof. Burkett
would remember how events occurred. Perhaps he could do a review article
now.

Boy, Linda, I have no idea what you're looking at, but the archives I
see at go right
up to today, July, 2009.

Send me (to my email address, not to clayart) the details of what
you're looking for and I'll try to help.

That's what I usually do, go straight to Google. If you never

typing site:potters.org and then your search subject into google will
limit the search to only the potters.org website. this way you don't have
to sift through the website if you're looking for something real specific.
