i think the two most scarrry places in a school are art time and
gym time. you have to` show what you got`. kids often draw
with their arm over their work. and everyone of them knows who
the talented kids are...they have envied them since kindergarten.
(fat kids just hate that mile run....talk about being embarrassed.)

if you went into any law office in america...lined up all the
attorneys and had them draw pix for an hour.
whoooo the howling. and then pin them all on the wall.( their drawings.)
you would see lollipop trees, birds the shape of the letter V and of course
stick people.
symbols of reality.
we can call it whatever you want...be academic...but, folks are not
very excited about showing what they do.

they may not admit it, say it does not matter...but, inside?
mel
and the biggest lie in the world...`oh mel, you were born talented
and your dna was all art.`
i worked my tail off, because i liked it. there was no dna talent
from the family i came from.

Thank you for that post Mel. I believe that it is so important for artists
and human beings not to be caught in the trap of a blown up ego. It's great
to receive praise, but don't fall for "Oh my god this is SO wonderful! You
are SO talented!" If you let that in too far, your work ethic can go down
the toilet. Thank them for their praise and get back to work. If you're
honest with yourself, you know you can do better. Humility is a great virtu=
e
and a pleasure to be around.

Sensible David Beaumee. To paraphrase...nice drawing, kiddo, like the dog -=
- now let's get back to work! Keep the child psychologists and the art ther=
apists out of childrens' art rooms! Have a look at Eisner, Gaitskell, Hurwi=
tz, or M. Steveni on Art Education.
