Hi Verna,

Does it happen more in certain parts of the kiln and does it happen on
certain parts of the pots?

We need to know how you fire your bisque and to what cone,

Do you have a controller on the kiln - do you have a kiln vent system
- if so what kind?

If you refire the blistered pots do they get better?

Do you use cones when firing bisque and glaze?

Different size kilns, newer kiln/new elements...lots of new variables.
Are you firing exact same firing schedule?
How do you know it's the same firing schedule?
Using witness cones?
Are position of witness cones the same from each of the different kiln
firings?
Do you have logs/records of firings in old kiln to compare with firing time
in new kiln?

I ask these questions because this is something that really affects results
in crystalline glaze firings. Folks change elements, same kiln, same progra=
m
data, but kiln actually fires faster with new elements.

Has anyone ever heard of this:

I had a Skutt 818 and I use Laguna Moroccan Sand cone 5 glazes. There are =

different combinations that I just loved but then I got a Skut KM 1027 and
when I try these combinations I get lots of bubbles and craters. No one
can explain this. Laguna even had me send samples to show them. I have
also talked with Skutt and also Orton.

I fire my bisque to cone 04.

Any input would be appreciated.

Verna, I am assuming that the only difference between the
good and bad firings was a change in kilns. The small kiln
gave you good results, and the large one produced bubbles
and craters. Perhaps the small kiln was vented better than
the large kiln.

Here is an article that might help:

Did your witness cones read a true cone 5 firing?

Denser stack in bisque kiln.Look for color changes in bisque ware. Try lo=

ramp from 1000-1600 F in glaze firing.
Blistering almost certainly not a cooling issue. Could be really fast
heating. Are they big blisters or more like pinholes. Makes a difference.=

Blisters in glaze usually from evolution of gas in the glaze. Me thinks
pinholes usually from evolution of gas in clay.
Maybe post picture somewhere.
Time to wake up younger son.
