Howdy Folks,
I've been skimming with weak interest our latest attentions to our
big-A-art fetish and I thought some of you may be interested in the
editors statement foun in the number 66 issue of _Art Lies_, a
contemporary art quarterly out of Texas. Here is the link to "Magma of
Stupidity", a small piece which discusses a topic about which we here
at ClayArt know a great deal:

OK, Taylor. I took a look. I conclude,
from experience and observation, that all of
us here on clayart ALREADY know how to be stupid
and/or behave stupidly.
I can do that, without a thought.
I want more.........

Taylor...
I just read your article. I guess I don't see how it relates to
anything we have been discussing. The entire article can be boiled
down to one sentence without losing anything; "Everyone I disagree
with is stupid, and I am smarter than almost everyone." Did I miss
something, or are you merely drawing a parallel between the attitude
of the authors and that displayed by certain posters to our list?
All the best.

Interestingly that is how I read it also. It show that the author is a bit
too enamored with his or her own perceived intellect. Notice the stupidity
of bringing in "the Bush era" when that really has nothing to do with the
theme other than act as a weak jab and preaching to the choir.
Thanks for bringing the article to us, Taylor. More fodder for my
contemporary art history class!!

Yee Haw y'all:
1) Interesting analysis of the editorial, James. It's short, read it
again. Keep this in mind while you read it the second time:
"The content of Art Lies is assembled by interim editor Kurt Mueller,
and supplemented by guest editorial contributors and a network of
regional editors. Each issue explores a distinct theme, with features
by a cast of international writers, critics, artists and curators. The
reviews section also reflects the theme of each issue with coverage of
exhibitions and books that reflect, refute and expand upon the ideas
presented in the features. Art Lies themes cover a wide range of
topics and issues, such as the changing role of the curator, an
exploration of theatrical devices in contemporary art and, most
recently, =3DE2=3D80=3D9CSecond Acts,=3DE2=3D80=3D9D an exploration of the =
extracurricu=3D
lar
activities, passions and proclivities of artists, curators and art
educators."
The editorial's authors (2) were merely whetting our appetites for the
topic of this quarter's number.
2) It appears that, yes, you may have missed some things. I for one
was introduced to Lauri Anderson, an artist of whom I have heretofore
be unaware. Glad I didn't miss that. The most interesting news to me
was, however, the names Parrhasius and Zeuxis. Again, I had never
heard of them (I don't think) nor of the fantastic story of their
competition. I think there is a very interesting connection between
the two Greeks, Jacques Lacan (remember his ideas from the old school
days?) and recent discussions here regarding drawing-children-etc.
Thanks to Wiki for the Greek/psychoanalyst connection.
3) Mostly this last part, yes. You are a cleaver boy.

Thought so! Wink, wink!
I just re-read your article. Still don't see it differently, and
still seem to be missing how it applies. Must just be me.
Here's the main problem with that article (as I see it). The first
sentence reads, "As a rule, stupidity is wishfully avoided by this
journal. Errors and lapses, as well as the dull, unintelligible,
obtuse and the obvious are precisely what we edit away." This
statement necessarily precludes from the authors' consideration any
possibility that they themselves might be stupid, or that their ideas
might be stupid. It requires the acceptance of the idea that they are
indeed able and qualified judges of stupidity, and they have anointed
themselves final arbiters. Or is that another clever parallel you are
drawing? Layers, like an onion!
Take care.
