Seriously folks, I have been advised that to "bombard" a customs
officer with emails, snail mail, or other "supportive" communication
is only going to backfire. NORMALLY, ACADEMIC TRAVEL IS TAKEN CARE OF
WITH A VISA, to do otherwise invites scrutiny, GET IT??? Phil has got
to sort this out, NOT US.
And TSA and Homeland Security has got nothing whatsoever to do with
Customs. Customs is an issue with every country, and most are more
restrictive than ours. For an American citizen to travel to Canada,
for example, to lecture and exhibit and sell pottery is expressly
forbidden - the U.S.A. may in fact be more lenient, but I would advise
leaving the Customs Officer doing their job alone -

"To me, human life in all its forms, individual and aggregate, is a
perpetual wonder: the flora of the earth and sea is full of beauty and
of mystery which seeks science to understand; the fauna of land and
ocean is not less wonderful; the world which holds them both, and the
great universe that folds it in on everyside, are still more
wonderful, complex, and attractive to the contemplating mind." -

Randy Brodnax and many others routinely present at MISSA
every year.
Clearly, there is a way to go to Canada and present. I would
ask the MISSA folks at Metchosin how they arrange it.

Going to Canada and Going to the USA are two completely different
situtations. When I lived in "the not to be mentioned country in
Asia", it was always easier to enter there than to come back home.
We are just back from the North Shore of Lake Superior. We didn't
have enough time to visit Canada, so we left our passports home.

I have taught several workshops at the Shadbolt Centre in Burnaby, just eas=
t
of Vancouver, and next summer I will be teaching at MISSA. As long as a
workshop in Canada (done by a foreign presenter) is five days or less, it i=
s
a simple matter, and all you need when you cross the border into Canada is
your passport, your employment contract signed by both parties and
indicating dates of the workshop, and your Canada tax waiver form, filled
out by the hosting venue. Shadbolt is very good about taking care of all
that. The first time I taught at Shadbolt, I forgot to bring my contract
with me, and all I had was the tax waiver. The Canadian border agent at the
kiosk had me park and go inside the customs building and an agent made a fe=
w
phone calls, and then they wished me a good time in Canada and sent me on m=
y
way. This time I had the signed contract and the tax waiver, and the
Canadian border agent in the kiosk looked at them, made a quick phone call
to his supervisor, returned my documents, wished me a good time in Canada,
and sent me on my way. Coincidentally, I returned via the Sumas crossing,
which is a ways inland but still west of the Cascades, and I was in line
behind three cars. Five minutes later I was in the US, and the American
border agent was actually PLEASANT. That's a first for me.
Things are far more complex if the workshop (or other teaching/employment
situation) is longer than five days, so I cannot address that.
