It's my opinion that since crystalline glazes do not always work, an
elaborate mythology (hocus pocus) has evolved to attempt to secure
better results. While in theory slow cooling at the high end should
ensure large crystals, hot and cool spots in the kiln may more affect
outcome than nursing it through the cooling process. At the proper
temperature, the crystals grow quickly... Also thickness of glaze
application is critical. I elaborate on these theories a bit on my
