One summer project has been to add on and rebuild my chimney stack with new
hard brick. I read about David Hendley's airtight castable stack, and thoug=
h
I mortared the new brick for the chimney, I can still see tiny gaps. Also,
the original chimney stack, built too short but made from high quality
hardbrick, still shows gaps even though I stuffed the wider gaps with fiber
from the inside. I've got the whole thing tied up with new angle iron, with
a new top plate and weld for the smokestack. Isn't there some sort of
castable that I could smear on the outside of the brick to make the chimney
airtight?

It might be to late for this but after I got my chimney base started I sta=
ggered the horizontal seam between the inner and outer layer of brick by se=
tting a split brick on one course and went up from there. Stick it all toge=
ther with a clay and grog based lag and fire it in and it should stand with=
out much angle iron bracing for quite some time.
