web slide show question

updated mon 6 sep 10

Sue Beach on wed 1 sep 10

I have been working on updating my web page. A friend recommended
Simpleviewer as a free program to create a slideshow of my pottery. The
slideshow I'm experimenting with works well except for one major problem - =
I
can't figure out how to edit the descriptions of the pottery that show in
the slideshow. Right now the default is the file name. I want to be able
to change that & also to include prices. I'm not a total newbie at web pag=
e
editing, but I can't figure out how to change the caption. Anyone using
Simpleviewer who can help me with this?

If you want to see what I am working on, go to the 'Archives' section of my
web site www.suebeachpottery.com/archives

Or, does anyone have a recommendation of a program (inexpensive or
shareware) that builds these slideshows & allows editing the
descriptions/captions?

Thanks for any help, guidance, suggestions.

It's actually =3D
http://www.suebeachpottery.com/BeachWare%20Archives%201/index.html

Don't use spaces in any files served by a web browser. They'll come out =3D
as %20 in some browsers and spaces on others and it's much safer to drop =
=3D
the space, use a hyphen or an underscore. You might as well keep it =3D
lower case too unless you have a good reason to capitalize.=3D20

You can edit your captions manually, see =3D
http://www.simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/support/manual.html

Even if you installed BuildGallery, you will need to edit gallery.xml by =
=3D
hand, http://www.simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/support/buildgallery.html

SimpleViewer seems fine. Nice wordpress plugin... Loads quickly and is =3D
sharp. You did the hard part already, so might as well stay with it, the =
=3D
competition doesn't offer anything all that much better. You may get a =3D
more customizable interface with Gallery or some others but they will =3D
also be harder to learn. This is nice and Simple.

From speaking to a few web and graphic designer friends of mine I have foun=
d
that slide shows are passe and considered amateurish. You may want to
reconsider using one on your website. To me the slide shows are the least o=
f
the offensive things on websites now. Top of the list is music you can't
turn off.... or music in general on a site. Second comes mainly on
photographers sites and that is the scroll sideways feature.

They don't really talk about what the latest greatest is. They usually talk
about what isn't good design or what program is the best to use.
They have mentioned big logos and headers and footers are coming minimalism
and attention to typography.

When I was working on the redesign of my own site, I learned a lot
about what not to do here:

http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/

Here is a good example of how not to do your site. I think it is a
hardcore leftist propaganda site, but I'm not really sure, as my
eyeballs are still spinning in their sockets! Anyway, the content
doesn't matter, it's the sheer brainpower that went into the site
design that overwhelms. Especially note the elegant and
straightforward site navigation and the minimalist layout:

http://www.havenworks.com/

And perhaps the best website of all time:

http://timecube.com/

Enjoy!

Hello James:

I think one of the best sites I ever visited is actually yours. especially =
the
pottery page.

Everyone do visit his website and tell if it is not one of the best. simple=
to
look at, easy to navigate, and full of wonderful things.

As for the supposedly good site you gave I thought it was pretty bad too.
